1 DAY VISIT TO THE DESERT AND THE TEMPLE OF DUSH IN THE OASIS OF KHARGHA

Temple of Dush

  • 375 km BY 4X4 THROUGH THE DESERT TO KHARGA OASIS.
  • CROSSING BARIS, 2ND TOWN OF THE OASIS.
  • VISIT THE PTOLEMAIC TEMPLE OF DUSH.
  • TRADITIONNAL MEAL AT A LOCAL’S HOUSE.
  • RETURN TO LUXOR LATE IN THE DAY AT SUNSET.

Departure early morning – we leave Luxor and the journey begins with views of these longed-for desert landscape.
We pass through Baris, the second city of the oases, located 90 km from Khargha. At about 20 km south of Baris, in Dush, we take a visit to the astonishing temple of Dush (Kesh in Egyptian and Kysis in Greek) from the Ptolemaic era, whose inner walls are thought to have been covered with gold. We go on enjoying a copious traditionnal meal at a local’s house in a village nearby. We then return to Luxor late in the day, with beautiful desert sights and the sunset through the dunes.

The temple of Dush was built in a Pharaonic style during the reign of Domitian, completed under Trajan and received his final decoration under Hadrian. Waves of sand surronds the temple’s base.
The hieroglyphs circumvent the walls and the monumental door recalls the grandeur of the era.
Even if the wooden ceiling is gone, the high walls provide a cool shade to the rooms that follow one another over 100m in length, to our delight. Unique in the region of the oases, the sanctuary consists of two longitudinal spaces covered with a vaulted ceiling. In the rear wall, a window points to a door that allows access by stairs, to the heights of the temple, facing the magnificent scenery of an endless desert. The atmosphere gives us an idea of what life was like at that time. The site is excavated each year by French archaeologists (IFAO). An important treasure was found, it contains pottery, coins, ostraca and jewelry but most especially documents, bills and letters from the time. Duch’s treasure is exposed to the Cairo Museum.
Return to Luxor late in the day, with beautiful desert sights and the sunset through the dunes

The people distinguish themselves by wearing broad-brimmed straw hat, made of woven palm tree leaves strips, which is exceptional in Egypt. The traditional headscarf is a large square of cloth embroidered with white color purple, a beautiful souvenir to bring back from the visit.

A pleasant stroll in the  town of Al-Qasr, uninhabited since the 1960′s, entirely made of mud-brick houses, shops and workshops where streets pass through homes then back to street again- it is easy to imagine the famous Aladdin back in the days running through this incredible maze. It is maintained by the people of the Oasis.

Desert hotelSome houses are decorated with a Qur’an verse or a name carved in a 500 years old acacia wood above the front door, there is the very old olive press, a  wheat grinder, the school, later transformed into a courtlots of narrow streets and stairs, a restored house offers the surprise of a 360 ° view of the village on the terrace, a must for photographic fun!

Bagawat Necropolis

- Stop on the exceptional site of the necropolis of Bagawat of the Christian era, and you will discover some of the frescoes moving Coptic, chapels and tombs of ancient and rich architecture..

The necropolis dates from the second century and was used until the seventh century AD. It contains about 230 graves Copts. We are surprised, amazed by the ochre ruins of mud brick, which served as funeral chapels for centuries.

Among the many Christian tombs used by the priests and nobles, there are some well-preserved chapels, the Chapel of Peace, the Chapel of the Exodus, one of the oldest in the cemetery (well-preserved paintings depicting scenes of the Old Testament) and 23 chapels, 24 and 25.
